ASWA Launches Creative Writing Competition 


Our competition, the inspiration of ASWA Member the Reverend Lynne Chitty, is launched in memory of Bishop John Austin Baker, former Bishop of Salisbury and ASWA President.    Entry details and Terms and Conditions may be downloaded here and follow below.


Entries are invited by 31 May 2018.  The entries will be considered by a panel with winners announced on the following Animal Welfare Sunday (7 October 2018).  Prizes extend to the first three places in each age category.  Entry costs £5 which can be paid via Shop (literature last item) or by cheque payable to ASWA.






TERMS & CONDITIONS OF ENTRY (Download or see blow)

  1. This is a writing competition. To enter, please send your original, unpublished poem or piece of prose, in English, of up to and no more than 500 words on the theme of “Marine Life” to or by post to Revd Lynne Chitty, Mill House Retreats, Rocknell Manor Farm, Westleigh, Devon EX16 7ES.  Please send the typed text and your full name, address and age (if under 18).
  2. 2. This competition is open to anyone in age groups as at 31 May 2018 – ‘adult’ [19 years and over], ‘youth’ [12-18 years] and ‘children’ [11 years and under] except for committee members and patrons of the Anglican Society for the Welfare of Animals [“ASWA”], their families, or anyone professionally connected to the competition either themselves or through their families. The competition is open to published and unpublished authors, but the entry must not have been published before.
  3. 3. The competition opens at mid-day on 1 September 2017 and closes at 11:59 pm on 31 May 2018. Any entries received outside these specified times and dates will not be eligible for entry into the competition.
  4. 4. By submitting your entry, you agree and warrant that (i) your entry has not been published before; (ii) your entry is entirely your own original work; and (iii) nothing in your entry is defamatory, private or an infringement of copyright or other intellectual property right or in any way a breach of another’s rights. Any entry in breach of this clause will be disqualified from participating in and winning the competition and the entrant will be obliged to compensate ASWA for any financial loss which ensues due to this breach.
  5. 5. One winner, a second and third place will be selected from the entries received for each group in accordance with these terms and conditions based on the following criteria: originality, relevance to theme and writing skill.
  6. 6. The ASWA Review Panel will read the entries received in accordance with these terms and will shortlist a maximum of 10 entries in each group. The winner, second and third placed will be chosen from the 10 shortlisted entries by 31August 2018 and the Panel’s decision will be final.
  7. 7. The winners’ name for each group will be announced by midnight 7 October 2018 on the ASWA website and social media accounts.
  8. 8. In the adult group the winner will be given £500, second £250 and third £100 as a cash payment.  In the youth and children groups, vouchers will be given to the values of winner £50, second £25 and third £10.
  9. 9. All entrants retain copyright of their entry. The winners of the competition grant ASWA a non-exclusive licence to publish their entry, in whole or in part, on the ASWA website, in the magazine AnimalWatch and on social media sites for a period of 24 months.
  10. 10. Entry fee is £5.00 per entry payable in full either by cheque [payable to ASWA] or on line via the ASWA website [PayPal] – please do not send cash.  Entry fees are being collected for the equal benefit and distribution to The Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society and Animals Asia.
  11. 11. Up to two entries per person are allowed. Subsequent entries will be disqualified. Entries will not be accepted in bulk or on behalf of someone else.  Joint submissions will not be accepted.  Entries may be withdrawn at any time up to 31 May 2018.
  12. 12. ASWA is not responsible for contacting or forwarding any prizes to entrants who provide unclear or incomplete information or for entries lost, misdirected, delayed or destroyed.
  13. 13. ASWA reserves the right to alter the prizes, these terms and conditions or cancel the competition. No cash alternatives to youth and children’s prizes will be provided.
  14. 14. ASWA will make available the name and county of the winner to anyone who requests this information by writing to the following address: ASWA, P O Box 7193, Hook, Hampshire RG27 8GT
  15. 15. The email addresses of entrants will only be used for the purpose of contacting the prize winners and administering the competition. It will not be possible for ASWA to contact unsuccessful entrants, give advice or feedback on unsuccessful entries or to enter into correspondence.
  16. 16. By entering the competition all entrants accept and agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

  18. 18. These terms and conditions and any disputes or claims (including non-contractual disputes or claims) arising out of these terms and conditions shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of England & Wales, whose courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction.
